Winter 2022 Action

Moms 4 Housing

M4H continues nonviolent direct action efforts, which are used as a tool to oppose housing insecurity and instability. Recently, Moms 4 Housing members staged a sit-in during a meeting of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to support renters in the unincorporated Eden area. We demanded three tenant protection policies be immediately enacted before the COVID eviction moratorium ends: a fair chance ordinance, banning discrimination against tenants with criminal records; rental registry, creation of a database with information on property owners and rent prices; and just cause for evictions, which would make it illegal for landlords to evict tenants without providing an eligible reason. All of these policies passed an initial vote in December 2022, however, due to the November 2022 election, a tenant-friendly seat on the Board of Supervisors was replaced with an individual who was supported by landlord groups during the campaign. As a result of the Board of Supervisors January 2023 decision to postpone the vote again, our nonviolent action to remain in the boardroom for 60 hours– representing the 60,000 tenants that would be covered by the proposed laws–shut down the meeting and ending with two Moms being detained, and one Mom being arrested (which was planned for and expected).
